Middle School Special Education Reading Teacher

Position Summary

Atlas Preparatory School seeks a Middle School Special Education Reading Teacher.  Atlas Preparatory School’s environment welcomes teachers who are relentless in their aim to see student growth and who want to hone their skills as effective teachers in the classroom. Below are some of the tasks required of faculty:

Responsibilities

  • Embody the characteristics that the school wishes the students to uphold, especially respect, excellence, authenticity, curiosity, hard work, and professionalism.
  • Lead reading interventions for designated small groups in push-in and pull-out models.
  • Manage a caseload of students and all relevant district, state, and federal paperwork/accounting.
  • Lead at least two quarters of an after school activity or after-school tutoring.
  • Instruct or coach during REACH Beyond (June enrichment program for scholars).
  • Serve as adviser for a group of students and their families, including regular communication, problem solving, and hosting quarterly family conferences.
  • Assist in student arrival and departure, transitions between class periods, and lunch periods.
  • Document all syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, and other curricular materials.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Head of School to develop and implement strategies for all students to reach success.
  • Reinforce school-wide rules and expectations in the classroom.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain strong relationships with students, families and colleagues.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of research-based curriculum.
  • Maintain the school culture of high academic and behavioral expectations through continuous reflection.
  • Use detailed data analysis of student performance to inform best practices.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director, Head of School or Team Leader.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Successful manager of an urban classroom who has used structure, incentives, and high expectations to drive student success.
  • Current Colorado teaching credential with special education generalist (5-21) endorsement or ability to attain one https://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeprof/endorsementrequirements.
  • Experienced classroom teacher with demonstrated, quantifiable and objective student performance gains that surpass state or local averages.
  • Ability to work with a variety of learning abilities, including those with low skill level in a heterogeneously grouped classroom setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team, especially with parents and community members.
  • Flexibility and initiative necessary to contribute to a startup organization.
  • Analytical problem solver.
  • Basic understanding of data analysis.
  • Professional demeanor.
  • Three years of urban teaching preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Our median faculty compensation is $55,000 with experienced and exceptional faculty earning up to $80,000 through a unique and aggressive teacher-centered compensation model based on four clear and meaningful performance metrics related to our vision: Student Growth and Achievement, Family Satisfaction, Classroom Culture of Achievement, and Professionalism.

What is the student demographic Atlas Prep intends to serve?

Atlas Prep is chartered through Harrison School District Two because it is a historically underserved and underperforming district in Colorado Springs. We currently serve a student of approximately 900 students in the 5th through 12th grade that is 91% free and reduced lunch, 68% Hispanic, 14% African-American, and 18% White.

What is meant by “relevant student achievement data”?

Concrete data that demonstrates candidates have achieved above average performance for their students in the past. Example data may include state / national exam scores, and or other meaningful internal exam data.

What is a charter school, and how is it different from a traditional public school?

A charter school is essentially a public school that has been granted greater autonomy over budget, curricula, and personnel, in return for greater accountability in the form of expected above average student achievement with a particular demographic of students and or academic model.
